Review – Facade – Unveiling the Masquerade by J Kahele

“Facade – Unveiling the Masquerade” by J Kahele is more than just another romance novel. It is a thriller full of intrigue. Favorite characters Liam and Ally both return in this second book of the acclaimed series.
Liam Sheldon, the book’s protagonist, takes a job in Maryland, referred to as the “Maryland Project.” Soon he finds himself returning to Chicago to testify against his old flame, Kate. In doing so he realizes how strong his feelings are for Ally.
Liam carries an old faded Polaroid photo of Ally and himself out for a night on the town. In addition, a very personal love note accompanies the image from the one he truly loves.
A driven man, full of life and sexual desire, has his target in his sights and will stop at nothing to get her.
Even with all of his recent business success, Liam realizes that there are certain things even money cannot buy. A meeting at a restaurant outside the courthouse confirms his strong feelings for her. Ally tries to convince herself that he is no good for he, but to no avail.
Liam’s ex, Kate, is on trial for the attempted murder and kidnapping of Ally. Is she guilty or criminally insane? Her antics and stalking of Ally are very suspect in this story.
As impulsive as he is driven, Liam often treats himself to a life of luxury. By fully indulging in all the trappings of wealth that a successful career can bring, he truly does “live large.”
His best friend and “bro” Stark makes a great buddy character for Liam and he is never far from the action. The two play well off of each other and even provide some nice comic relief that helps connect the story together as we move along the hero’s journey.
But he is as generous with gifts as he is as a lover when it comes to Ally. The scenes involving their interactions are engaging and well written.
Will he claim her as his prize in the end? You must read this one to find out. we can only hope it all works out in the end.
If you enjoyed the “Mine” trilogy, you should definitely check out the “Facade” books. The ending is satisfying and the author does a great job in creating a set of bookend scenes around this story. And hopefully we are now set up for more to come in this series.

AboutTheAuthorI am a married mother of three teenage girls and live in south eastern Michigan. I have one flaw that could rightly be considered the worst flaw possible. I procrastinate constantly, which gets me into a little more trouble than I like, especially with my girls. I love to swim, ride horses, relax to a good book and spend time with my family. Writing has helped me to calm down the very hectic life I have and release the scattered thoughts that often run through my head,(no I don’t hear voices), but I do envision characters of my books, when I see people interacting around me. That’s pretty much sums up my life!

Facade_Excerpt1

After months of hard work and dedication, the Maryland project was finally ready for sale. With over five hundred business owners bidding for the new improved company, Liam sat in on negotiations for weeks before finally choosing a buyer.

The project not only proved to be the most profitable one, but it also defined his company as one of the most sought-after investment companies in the world. His email constantly swarmed with potential customers begging for him to buy them out.

He should be ecstatic, proud that he had finally accomplished the one feat he strived for—success. But the triumphant prosperity was bittersweet. Selling out his heart to a life of loneliness was not worth the price.
Sitting at his desk, he glanced fondly at the Polaroid, snapped by a photographer when he traveled with Ally to New York to see the play Les Miserables. He frowned as he saw the dingy yellow cast surround the fading picture, a common consequence of the cheap film. His lip quirked up on one side slightly as her reflection caught his eye, her shiny dark hair framing her face elegantly, bringing attention to the gold flecks in her amber eyes. She is so beautiful.

Even after eight months, his heart still ached for her every breathing moment.
Sliding his hand into his suit coat pocket, he pulled out the folded paper that he carried with the Polaroid everywhere he went. It was his reminder of a happier time, the only thing that helped him make it through each agonizing day without her.

A lump began to form in his throat as he carefully unfolded the note she had left him the morning after they had made love for the first time. It read:
Liam,

I wanted to thank you for an unbelievable night. I know it may be a one-time thing, and I don’t expect more. But I need you to know that it was very special to me and a night I will always remember.
Ally xoxo

Memories instantly flooded his mind: her invisible scent tingling through his nose; her smile playing tricks on his eyes as he envisioned her staring down at him.
“Ally,” he muttered, and instantly the vision disappeared. The illusion devastated him and he grunted, squeezing his eyes closed tightly as a soaring fleet of mixed emotions shot through his head, making him restless and shaky. God, I miss her!

The guilt and regret still lay heavy on his heart, igniting the suffering and agony that seemed to haunt him since he had left Chicago. Breathlessly he grabbed the sides of his head, yanking at his hair, attempting to quote his mantra, the one that made him better, stronger—but  the words dissipated from his mind and only visions of Ally and the last time he saw her lingered behind his eyelids.

Her eyes—those beautiful eyes, glazed with hurt and pain that he had cast upon her, after he selfishly shattered his promise to never break her heart.
“We were no good for each other,” he mumbled under his breath. But even as the words floated out of his mouth, he knew there was no real truth to them.

<><><><><><><><>

I had the idea to write Alabama Skye about five years ago. The main premise of the story has always been the same, although many of the details changed between when I first started writing it and when it was completed. I was writing another novel, my first, when the story for Alabama Skye came to me. I had to put the book on hold for a bit, and many things happened in my personal life that shaped Alabama Skye and made it what it eventually became.

Every single one of the characters in Alabama Skye is special to me in one way or another. The most special, however, is Sarah Guthrie Gannon, the matriarch and heart of the story. She is based on my own grandmother, a wonderful, loving and amazing woman whom I always called Mimi. Like Sarah, Mimi had Alzheimer’s and eventually passed away in May of 2013. Alabama Skye was published just a little over a year later. The book is dedicated to her.

Mimi and Sarah are not really that much alike in character. Sarah is feisty, the belle of the ball, and in her younger years I imagine her to be larger than life. Mimi was not that way, although she was, perhaps, the largest thing in my young life. Mimi was also the reason Cheney, another main character, turned out to be the way she is. Mimi had a fascination with all things Scottish, and traveled to the UK sometime in the ‘80’s. After her return, she had a poster of Eilean Donan castle on Loch Duich framed. It hung in her home for many years, and now it hangs in my office next to a poster for Alabama Skye. I think that Mimi and Cheney would have been very good friends. Mimi probably would have picked up some Gaelic from the Scotswoman while the two of them sat and shared a drink in a pair of Cheney’s beautiful white mugs; Mimi’s cup full of hot black coffee and Cheney’s with fragrant tea. I loved learning about the Isle of Skye and getting to know Cheney as I wrote. She is a complex character and one I feel quite fond of.

Alabama Skye is not autobiographical as some readers believe. There is not much of me in any of the characters, and I don’t have a whole lot in common with any of them save the relationship I shared with Mimi. That is definitely reflected in the relationship between Greer and Sarah. I am also a mother and know how it feels to be committed to your children just as Meara and Greer are committed to theirs. While I love to cook, I am not a successful chef, nor do I drive a sporty little Beetle by the name of Penelope. However, Meara’s book shop, The Cheshire Cat, was based on a store I frequented a lot as a child, and The Alice and Wonderland theme was taken from some favorite childhood memories.

I grew enormously attached to this group of characters. Much to my delight, many of my readers did as well. I have been asked many times if there will be a sequel to Alabama Skye. I thought their stories had been told, but I have, since then, been hearing them whispering quite loudly in my ears. It didn’t take much persuasion to get me to head back to Kelby, Alabama and pick up where I’d left off. In this second book, which is yet untitled, readers will follow Noah as she continues to build her business and finds out that she isn’t exactly who she always thought herself to be. Readers will also travel across the Atlantic and unearth some more secrets that Cheney and Meara’s father, Finlay, left for them to find in a small town in the lowlands of Scotland.

I always welcome feedback and would love to hear from you.

Book Description

“When tragedy befalls Cheney McGillvray, she decides to pack up and leave her beloved home on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. She travels to the beachfront town of Kelby on Alabama’s gulf coast and appears unannounced on her sister Meara’s doorstep with a plan not only for her own future but also for that of her niece.
Greer, fresh out of culinary school and two months pregnant, takes the advice of her headstrong grandmother Sarah, and agrees to a partnership with her aunt. Together they transform Sarah’s beautiful old home into a proper Scottish B & B right in the heart of America’s southland.
Both women realize the time to face their pasts has arrived in the weeks before they are to open Gannon’s Glen. Cheney finds it difficult to hide the darkness of her past when she begins suffering from debilitating nightmares that bring Greer to her bedside at night and a hurricane sweeps in more than stormy weather. News of the destruction of his childhood home brings Greer’s high school sweetheart and their unresolved relationship back into town. Although they are nearly strangers separated by a forty year age gap, Cheney and Greer lean on one another as they come to terms with their lives and realize the possibilities of their futures.
Sprinkled with humor and colorful descriptions of both the Gulf Coast and that of Scotland’s Inner Hebridean Islands, Alabama Skye is a story about the strength of four generations of women who discover that when things go wrong the ones who stand by you and the ones who carry you are the ones you call family.”

Interview with Author J. Kahele

Me 2

1. A little about yourself. What is unique about you? I am a 46 year old married mother of three girls. I suppose the most unique quality I have, is I write without a plot or reason. I use my eyes to investigate what surrounds me and write it down.

2. What is your book about? My book is about a 22 year old woman, Jenna Kramer who is married to a very controlling and abusive man, 39 year old Senator Benjamin Kramer.

In Jenna’s mind this is how love and marriage is, so she accepts it and takes the punishment that Benjamin hands out to her. Its not, until she meets and an affair ensues between her and 26 year-old attorney, Andrew Carington, that she finds her life can be different.

There is only one problem with the life of happiness that Jenna desires, her husband Ben Kramer, will never let her go and her life plummets into a dark

3. What inspired your book? The judgment of society is that if a woman is abused, seek help. But it is not that easy, sometimes. I speak for the women, who have sought help, yet are still dealing with the abuser, as Jenna has had to. Domestic violence is a problem that needs to be taken care of in the higher courts. As my story explains, people of higher influence, tend to slide out of punishment for their crimes against the innocent.

4. What is the most rewarding part of being an author? Being able to share your words and thoughts and other’s appreciating them

5. What has been the most challenging part of being an author? Attempting to write what your mind is thinking. It is hard to find the right words some of the times to match the thoughts your mind is revealing.

6. What advice would you give a new author writing their first book? Write with honesty. Don’t write to please others, right only to please yourself.

7. Do you have any promotion tips for Indie Authors? Yes. Make sure you use a book promoter who is understanding and patient as I have found with Elite Book Promotions.

8. If you could recommend One book for authors to read, what would it be? Bertram & Gertrude’s Steamy Amsterdam Weekend by William Frederick

9. Write about your passion and promote yourself in 200 words or less. Writing is like breathing, it is something so natural, yet so needed. It is relaxing and fulfilling to read the words you have written, it brings a serenity that only other authors understand. I do not write for recognition from my peers. I do it because I need to. It’s not on a moment’s notice, I write. I write to release the thoughts that fill my head on a daily basis.

I do not use an outline, or think of a plot. It just happens, it comes to me and I write it down. If it is a drive down the road, that billowy cloud hovering above you, or the ocean crashing to the shore. That woman sobbing in the train station, or the little boy crying over his hurt puppy. My mind wanders, just by all of these small incidents, it does not take anything around it for granted. It takes all the natural inner feeling and puts it into words.
